Methodology
  • This dataset was created from surveys of grocery stores/retailers accepting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Enumerators visited stores and recorded data on the price, quality, and availability of certain nutritious foods sold by that retailer. Additional data was collected on the environment of the store (such as whether there was a parking lot), whether the retailer accepted WIC or not, and whether ready-to-eat foods were available. Stores were categorized into a typology developed by the USDA. During the data cleaning process, data formats were standardized, and missing data was interpolated with data collected from a similar store type. All enumerators' names were deidentified. Stores that were identified as international markets (i.e. sold foods not typically seen on the store survey) were marked as such.
Description
  • As part of a study to make food policy recommendations to the City of Indianapolis, this component of the study was concerned with assessing the food environment of SNAP retailers across the city. This survey was carried out to understand food access in Indianapolis, especially when such access concerns marginalized residents.
